When I used to live at the west edge of the business district in downtown Cincinnati in the mid 2010’s, a new breakfast spot opened up that was just the perfect distance from our apartment. Maplewood Kitchen and Bar, one of the many culinary adventures from Thunderdome Restaurant Group. Nestled within the 84.51º Building at 525 Race St., Maplewood sits between esteemed neighbors Mita’s and Americano Burger Bar, promising a dining experience that transcends the ordinary.

In our most recent visit, a few friends and I decided to have brunch after our night out. On a Sunday at peak brunch time, expect to have a wait. Upon entering Maplewood, guests are enveloped in a bright, inviting ambiance, accentuated by white-washed woodwork and expansive windows that welcome the natural light. With a seating capacity of 150, the restaurant strikes a perfect balance between chic elegance and comfortable intimacy.

Unlike traditional seating, you order at the counter and then your food will be brought out to you. I really do like this approach when it’s not too busy. It gives you just the right amount of time to peruse the menu so you can order and enjoy time with the people you’re with. While Maplewood does have traditional seating, they also have a nicely sized bar if you’re on your own or want that experience as well.

Our table ordered the Shakshuka, The Maplewood Burger, and the Maplewood Hash. We also treated ourselves to some delicious caffeinated beverages, one Cappucino and and one Latte. While we waited on our food to arrive, you have the option to self serve their main beverages from the fountain or water (sparkling if you’re me) on tap.

I’m a huge fan of Shakshuka and it’s been some time since some time since I’ve had it out while eating so it was a pleasant brunch treat. The hash was also a delight. As this is most west coast inspired, we made the mistake of not ordering fries with the burger which did come with greens instead. As with any breakfast, I do like myself some toast and they carry bread from Sixteen Bricks Artisan Bakehouse so it’s always nice to have some quality toast and jam to replenish the carbs.

While the menu boasts an array of West Coast-inspired delights, including quinoa cakes and cold-pressed juices bursting with vitality, Maplewood also pays homage to traditional favorites. Indulge in fluffy Lemon Ricotta Pancakes adorned with fresh berries and locally produced syrup, or savor the comfort of a classic omelet paired with crispy bacon or savory goetta.

And let’s talk beverages. Cold-pressed juices that are basically a health elixir? Check. Craft cocktails that’ll make your taste buds sing? Double check. Maplewood knows how to quench your thirst, whether you’re in the mood for a detox or a little indulgence.

So, if you’re in the mood for brunch that’s equal parts indulgent and nourishing, do yourself a favor and head to Maplewood Kitchen and Bar. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
